Have you ever sent money to the wrong person by mistake? Maybe you typed one wrong digit in the account number or chose the wrong contact from your UPI app. It happens more often than we think — and it can be stressful. But don’t worry, there are steps you can take to recover your money.
Let’s understand what to do if you’ve transferred money to the wrong account.

    1. Act Quickly
As soon as you realize the mistake, note down the transaction ID, date, time, and amount. The faster you act, the higher your chances of getting the money back.

    2. Contact Your Bank or Payment App
Reach out to your bank or the UPI app (like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm) immediately. Share the transaction details and explain the error. Ask them to initiate a reversal request to the recipient’s bank.

    3. File a Complaint with the Recipient’s Bank
If you know the bank name of the person who received the money, write a formal complaint to that bank. Include your transaction details and request them to contact the account holder and return the funds.

    4. Inform the Police or Cyber Cell (if needed)
If the receiver refuses to return your money or is unreachable, you can file a complaint at your local police station or through the cybercrime portal cybercrime.gov.in. This step is important to document your attempt to recover the funds.

    5. Raise a Complaint with RBI Ombudsman
If your bank does not help or delays action, you can escalate the matter by filing a complaint with the Banking Ombudsman through the RBI CMS portal.

Preventive Tips to Avoid Mistaken Transfers

    • Double-check account numbers and names before confirming payment.
    • Use UPI QR codes or saved contacts instead of typing details manually.
    • Set a small daily limit if you often transfer money to new contacts.

    Final Thoughts
Mistaken money transfers are unfortunate but not impossible to fix. The key is to stay calm and take immediate action. Banks and authorities have systems in place to help you — but you need to act fast and follow the right steps.
